Transportation at Darwin Airport
Taxis are the easiest way to get from the airport to wherever you want to go! The taxi rank at Darwin Airport is directly in front of the terminal, making it simple to catch a cab. Expect to pay around $25-$30 for a trip into the Darwin CBD, as well as a $3 exit toll which applies to all taxis leaving the airport rank.
Taxi companies represented in the rank include City Radio Taxis, Darwin Radio Taxis and People Movers NT, which is a mini-bus service for large groups.
Car Rental in the Terminals
Five car rental companies have counters on the ground floor of the terminal building, near the domestic baggage collection. These are AVIS, Budget, Europcar, Hertz and Thrifty. Whilst these are the only companies with branded desks at the airport, do some research before booking as smaller car rental companies may have shuttle or meet-and-greet services to aid travellers in renting their vehicles from the airport.
For good prices and knowledgeable consultants on a range of big and small car rental suppliers operating at Darwin Airport, see www.darwinairportcarhire.com.au. On the site you can pre-book your car rental to make exiting the airport a breeze.
Bus and Shuttle Services
The Darwin Airport Shuttle Bus is a convenient and reliable way to get between the airport and Darwin City. This service meets all incoming flights, and can drop you off to all Darwin CBD accommodation. You can pre-purchase tickets online at www.darwinairportshuttle.com.au or buy them at the Darwin Airport Shuttle desk. Shuttles to the airport should be pre-booked so that the shuttle driver knows which accommodations to visit. This can also be done online or by calling 08 8981 5066. You will need your flight number to book.
There are no public buses into the city from the airport, however there is a bus stop on Charles Eaton Drive which is about ten minutes’ walk from the terminal. This stop services routes into the northern suburbs.
Other bus companies such as Greyhound (www.greyhound.com.au) and Grand Touring Coaches (www.grandtouringcoaches.com.au) charter buses for events and large groups in the Northern Territory. See their websites for further details.
The Stuart Highway will take you from the airport into the city centre, but it is on the opposite side of the airport facility to the terminals. Leave the terminal area on Henry Wrigley Drive, and turn left at a T-intersection onto McMillans Road. At the end of McMillans Road, turn left onto Bagot Road. This will take you to the Stuart Highway, and if you turn right onto it, to Darwin’s centre. Turning left onto the highway will take you out of the city and south.
